Chapter 5 Indices for Assessing Dentition Parameters

In 2014, the Department of Orthodontics at MSUMD was the first to propose a unified form of the anthropometric study protocol for plaster dental models. The protocol consists of two sections: «Measurements» and «Conclusion» (Fig. 5.1).

The title section of the protocol includes the patient's name, age, and the orthodontic period the patient is in (examination, treatment, retention).

The measurement section begins with information about the mesiodistal dimensions of the 12 teeth of the upper and lower dentition since the analysis of further information about the measurement parameters is based on the nature of the individual tooth dimensions (Fig. 5.2).

The following is a list of parameters, which in most cases should be enough to fully and competently compose a treatment plan for an orthodontic patient using other methods of examination. To determine individual reference indices, for the first time we proposed index values of the interdependence of the measured parameter with the reference value.

The first group of measured parameters are those that characterize the proportionality of the summary sizes of various groups of teeth and the analysis of the longitudinal length of the dentitions (Fig. 5.3).

The index ratio of the total value of the mesiodistal dimensions of the upper 12 teeth to the total value of the mesiodis-tal dimensions of the lower 12 teeth (parameter No. 2 is normally 1.08) is suggested as an alternative to the percentage ratio of the lower parameter to the upper one in Bolton's method. The same applies to parameter number 5, the norm is 1.29. Parameter No. 7 characterizes the ratio of incisors according to Tonn's method (1.33).
