3.1. General characteristics of the nervous system
The nervous system is a physiological system that is specialized in the reception, processing, and preservation of information about the external and internal environment of the body, and its use for interaction of the
whole organism with the external environment. Along with the endocrine and immune systems, the nervous system is the regulating system of the body, occupying the primary position among them.
The main functions of the nervous system are: 1) regulating various functions of the body; 2) integrating various body parts with one another; 3) controlling interactions of the body with the environment (including the social sphere) and adapting to it; 4) generating purposeful behavior; and 5) transmitting information about the external environment throughout the body.
