FOREWORD

The authors renewed the new edition of the handbook of otorhinolaryn-gology in accordance with the latest updates in the diagnostics and treatment of ENT disorders. Significant modifications have been made to the sections concerning pharmacological therapy of ENT diseases, clinical evaluation and treatment of a number of common diseases of the ear, nose, and throat.

Ear, nose and throat organs work together to provide respiration, olfac-tion, speech, hearing, and balance. They performance are closely tied with the cardiovascular, immune, and hematopoietic system, as well as with gastrointestinal tract, musculoskeletal system, and other systems of the body. In case of a disease, such multilateral tight physiological (and, to a great extent, anatomical) interaction between ENT organs and these systems causes pathological responses in both directions. During most diseases infection-induced toxic and neuro-reflex processes are exerted by ENT organs, and this causes or activates general and local pathological alterations in the body. Therefore, diagnostic and therapeutic issues in clinical practice can be resolved at a high professional level only if you have basic knowledge of otorhinolaryngology which you can find in the handbook.

This edition contains fundamentals of otorhinolaryngology. To improve learning of the clinical material, the book provides brief information on the anatomy and physiology of ENT organs with regard to diagnostics and treatment.

Medical examination of the nose, pharynx, larynx, and acoustic canal is essential to obtain basic information (visual) about the nature of a disease of these organs. The examination techniques are simple and feasible for each doctor. This handbook uncovers ways to acquire basic ENT examination skills.
