PART 1. READING
Exercise 1. Answer the questions.
1. What is the induction of labour?
2. What is the breech presentation?
3. What is the caesarean section?
Exercise 2. Describe the meaning of the statement: "If something goes wrong and doctors make decision to interfere the process of delivery (labour)".
Exercise 3. Read the text and say if the following statements are true (T) or
false (F).
1. Sometimes doctors deliberately initiate the labour in case of the risks of allowing the pregnancy to continue outweigh the risks of induction.
2. If labour is slow in starting, a synthetic form of the hormone oxytocin is taken intramuscularly.
3. About 24 percent of babies present in the breech position when labour starts.
4. Using a technique called a version, an obstetrician always turns the baby to a head down position.
5. An ultrasound examination and close observation of the progress of labour are also important.
6. Vacuum-assisted births can be used with a partly dilated cervix and a well-descended head.
7. A cesarean section, also called a C-section, is a surgical procedure in which an incision is made through a woman?s abdomen and uterus to deliver her baby.
8. All C-sections are planned.
SPECIAL DELIVERY
Each pregnancy and delivery is different. If something goes wrong, doctors make decision to interfere the process of delivery (labour). Sometimes it is the emergency action.
Induction of labour. Sometimes doctors deliberately initiate the labour. It is usually carried out when it is considered that the risks of allowing the pregnancy to continue outweigh the risks of induction - as is often the case in retarded fetal growth or post-maturity. After the cervical examination, the doctor will use a pessary containing a substance that causes the uterus to contract and the cervix to open. The doctor then locates the membranes around the amniotic fluid in which the baby floats, and makes a small, painless cut in the membranes to drain the fluid away. Sometimes, these procedures alone are enough to initiate labour. If labour is slow in starting, a synthetic form of the hormone oxytocin is slowly passed into the bloodstream by intravenous drip (IV). The hormone encourages the uterus to contract as in natural labour. The progress of induced labour is monitored throughout by fetal monitoring, or less commonly by frequent physical examination.
