DIET AND PREGNANCY
Good nutrition during pregnancy is vital. What a woman eats and drinks during pregnancy is her baby?s main source of nourishment. A varied diet that includes the right amount of healthy foods from the five food groups generally provides our bodies with the vitamins and minerals it needs each day. A pregnant woman needs more calcium, folic acid, iron and protein than a woman who is not expecting. Calcium is used to build a baby?s bones and teeth. Additional amounts of iron are needed to make more blood to supply the baby with oxygen. More protein is needed during pregnancy to build important
organs for the baby, such as the brain and heart. Folic acid helps to protect against neural tube defects in the developing baby.
