Chapter 1. General epidemiology
The purpose of the section is to study the basic concepts that characterize epidemiology as a science, and the specifics of the epidemiological approach to the study of human diseases.
As a result of studying the topic, students should know:
- etymology of the term “epidemiology”, definition and structure of modern epidemiology;
- object and main subject of epidemiology;
- essence of the epidemiological approach in the study of phenomena that characterize the population health;
- aims of epidemiology;
- definition and content of the epidemiological method;
- importance of epidemiology for the national economy and public health.
As a result of studying the topic, students should be able to:
- define epidemiology as a fundamental medical science related to the field of preventive medicine, its structure and main objectives;
- define the object and subject area of epidemiology;
- determine the main directions and essence of the epidemiological approach to the study of human diseases.
