This tutorial guide for exercising practical skills is a result of the work of teachers of the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy of Sechenov University that helps to improve the process of teaching students the basic elements of surgical technique. The guide consists of two parts.
The first part contains the names, devices and a brief description of general-purpose surgical instruments that are used in any surgical operation. The second part of contains the main ways of using surgical instruments in surgical interventions.
Separation and connection of tissues, bleeding control in the surgical wound are essential elements of surgical technique when performing any surgical operation. Most often, in surgery, these actions are applied to “soft tissues” — skin, subcutaneous fatty tissue, fascia, muscles, etc. Therefore, the main model for developing the skills to perform the basic elements of operational techniques are native soft tissues of the extremities, fixed in formalin or non-fixed, as well as artificial simulators. It should be noted that the development of surgical skills on cadaver material is only the first stage in the development of surgical techniques. If possible, laboratory animals can also be used as a model.
The final establishment of surgical skills should be provided by training in clinical surgical departments and during medical practice.
At the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy, the student must also acquire the ability to use general surgical instruments (instruments for tissue separation, accessory and fixing instruments, hemostatic clamps, instruments for tissue connection).
