Dear students of dental faculties!
The “Oral Surgery” textbook, which you are now holding in your hands, was compiled by the staff of the Department of Oral Surgery of the Educational Department of the Institute of Dentistry of I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (Sechenov University). The idea to create this textbook have arisen due to the rapid changes in higher education, the abolishment of internship, the introduction of accreditation for graduates of medical universities, and recent updates to regulatory documents in the healthcare system. Moreover, advanced and enhanced versions of well-known techniques of surgical treatment of dental diseases, as well as new materials and equipment, are constantly developed and introduced into clinical practice, while clinical guidelines of the Russian Dental Association are steadily updated. We tried to take all this into account so that all graduates of the dental faculties of medical universities could be more competent in the clinical and legal aspects of the work of an oral surgeon in modern conditions.
In the section dedicated to the organization of oral surgical care for the population of the Russian Federation, the latest directive documents and regulations are presented and recommendations for oral surgeon, which should be carried out according to the principles of ethics and deontology, are given.
In the description of dental diseases for which surgical treatment is indicated, questions of the etiology and pathogenesis of each nosological form are set forth. In addition, the pathological anatomy, clinical picture, diagnosis, as well as methods of treatment and patient routing to other specialized medical institutions are all described.
In the part dedicated to the diagnostics and treatment of benign and malignant tumors and tumor-like lesions, special attention is paid to the principle of oncological alertness. Given the constant growth in the number of patients with this pathology, it is necessary to strengthen the position of prevention and early diagnosis of neoplasms at the precancerous stage.
The surge in popularity of oral surgery in recent years can be explained by the rapid development and widespread introduction of dental implantology and methods of surgical preparation to it, such as osteoplasty and mucogingival surgery into clinical practice. With the task of lifelong implant placement set by the Russian Association of Dental Implantology, all aspects of increasing the durability of implants are becoming very important: the design of the implants themselves, navigation for their correct position, research and development of materials for dental implants, manufacturing technologies for implants and the prosthetic structures based on them, features of professional oral hygiene and peri-implantitis treatment methods. All these questions are now included in the certificate program, and they all have been accorded an appropriately significant place in our textbook.
The authors hope that our textbook will be an instrumental in studying theory and mastering practical skills in oral surgery. The writing team will gratefully consider any constructive feed back.
